WallFishing - Tools
« on: February 10, 2007, 07:29:07 AM »
WallFishing is as easy as the tools you have to do it with.

I myself have just ordered the MagnaFish. When I get a chance to use it Ill be sure to post back. Its pretty expensive( $80-$100.00) but if you are a contractor and getting paid by the fish and not the hour you can definately get more work done in less time.

Below is a simple preview of how it works. The hardest part to me of doing a wall fish is the need to be in two places at once most times. Fishing down or up is always easier with two sets of hands and eyes.
Without the right tools you can climb in and out of an attic 8-10 times trying to get your line where it needs to be and locate it inside the wall. There are of course cheaper alternatives that would work just as well.

Drill hole, insert heavy metal hanger into wall cavity.
Go into the room and use the magnet to locate the hanger.

Slowly pull the hanger down to the hole.

When you get to the hole the hanger should pull out when
it slides off the wall and onto the magent.
Then remove the hanger and attach your line to pull up
or if you have attached your line to the hanger you are done!

Theres no reason you couldnt buy a large industrial magnet and make one of these for a lot less. But this one comes with a real Neat-O case.  :naughty:

WallFishing - Tools - Glow Rod
« Reply #1 on: February 10, 2007, 07:44:15 AM »
The next tool is a "Glow Rod" or Fiber Sticks.

I myself have never gotten the hang of them. They have helped me out a few times but I most likely never entered a situation where they were the RIGHT tool.

What makes Glow Rods work is their collection of accesories.

The WISP

A wisp head is mainly used for drop ceiling pulls. The head shape eases
the rod when being pulled over all the t-tracks the drop ceiling inserts
into. Also anything else your rods usually get caught on.

The Ring

The ring simply attaches to the rod and eases in pulling the rod
down or retireving the end and attaching something to it.

Magnet Head

Usually used with another angeled intrument to fish out the
line in a cavity.

be sure to keep that magnet in the case. it doesn't take much to leave marks on walls and this thing will be making lots of contact. customers get pretty pissed when you mark up their nice, clean walls. however, tip for cleaning marks off of walls, pencil erasers all the way!

You said, "pull out"!  :D

Have you seen the new magnafish?  The magnet is actually on a roller and looks like a small paint roller.  Much easier to keep from marking up the walls.  Especially if you keep a piece of paper under it to keep it from making actual contact with the surface.

i do it ghetto style i stick a long cable stinger through the sheet rock right above the cable plate then i go up into attic once with my drill and cable and i find it and drill a hole down then i send my cable attached to my glow rod down to the hole lol simple as that

glad i work in a system that dosent fish walls anymore though it sucked in the past when i did it everyday, now i  only do it on the side for 50-90$ a wallfish
