Linefinder
« on: November 10, 2011, 10:22:46 PM »
So after being sent back to the same damn nursing home for the 4th time to identify every damn line in the place (45 resident rooms plus 10 common rooms) because someone is cutting tags off and breaking into the MDUs, I happened across this little product.

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it, and how well it works,  I'm sure I can push them to buy it for this location due to the fact that it takes forever to map out every line and it will save them in the long run.  And besides if I walk into another room where 2 old people are doing the nasty, I'm going to gouge my eyes out and file workers comp.

from what ive read on these, the parts you put on the drop have a unique serial number that responds back to the handheld device.

Thats kind of neat but also another filter/point of failure.

It would be super cool if each one had a unique identifier and was addressable!

"OK Sir, I have activated the bedroom outlet, you may now install your modem!"
"Thanks!"
"Sir, we have detected sever noise coming from that new Modem Outlet, we are now disconnecting it and setting up a service call.."
"Wait ... what?!"

i've seen alot of apt theft but it's not something i think of in a nursing home. that would  have to be a staff member i would think.    a more secure lock box sounds like a cheaper  option with threat of discontinued service if persists.

Tap audit crew (when the had a F/T tap audit crew) were flooding MDUs with these for a year. They all went the way of the F/T tap audit crew. Hardware was DCA'ed.

We started using these at one point a few years ago.  Problem was that they didn't tell the service/installers, and so they would show up for a service call after it had been installed, pull the wall plate, see it and say, here is your problem, and pull it from behind the wall plate.  Imagine that, a lack of communication....

So... was it causing the problem or was the tech guesstimating ?
I'm sure your in-house bench testers did a full Q.A. on these before they let them in the wild... didn't they ? :duh:

I feel for you nexis.. I hate them dang places. No matter how "upperclass" or "rural"  some of them can be, all of them have dementai/alzheimers patients who escaped their rooms and are running around barely dressed screaming and crying for help and that they want to go home. After no more then 30 minutes I find an excuse to go outside for a smoke break because it's to hard on my hart and I feel I may crack.
We always have staff accompany us if we have to go into rooms so we don't get blamed for misplaced items (it's going to happen here... except it). That also shields us from any inappropriate attire visuals we may see as staff goes into the room and gives the all clear before entering.

Lucky for us, some buildings (nursing homes) have the taps outside in pedestals still and the newer ones have them (way) above the drop ceiling so tampering, even by staff, would be vary visible to everybody.
I surprised your supervisor hasn't called the building supervisor and made them aware of the situation ?

Not sure of your county/state contract agreement, but the option of not servicing that building may be an option if the tampering is documented.

I'd agree with CT that those are just another filter waiting to fail and should only be used in extreme situations. I've also marked with sharpie, re-tagged them farther back unseen, and de-tagged/cut back drops of repeat offenders/rooms (and note account). Almost all customers are to lazy run their own drops  ;D

This "mapper" has saved me so much time. even in apartments that are not labeled correctly. I ussally get work orders saying, "Tech could not find line please rewire MDU... and Ill be there for 10 mins and find it. I also use the colors as "Modem line" is blue and video is the rest... making the perfect d-mark.

I'm tempted to get one of these but it says to throw it away when batteries die. Can anyone confirm whether or not it's possible to replace the batteries in this thing? Deal breaker if you really can't.

The way I read it, it appears they should be replaceable.

I would think so too from the wording of what comes with it. However from the pdf for it....

Note: The tester has no replaceable parts and is permanently sealed. The tester should be disposed of properly when the battery is depleted.

Not unless the pdf is old & they've changed the design?

According to the one review on Amazon, batteries are indeed not replaceable:
